Yes, you don’t lose out on your wisdom after your dentist removes all the wisdom teeth.

Wisdom Teeth are your third molars, your jaw has a total of 32 teeth as we all know and there are 4 wisdom teeth that erupt/remain embedded in bone/ completely missing in your mouth.

So lets get down to facts!

Our jaws with evolution have become smaller in size and thus the third molars might not get enough space to erupt into the oral cavity. You’re a lucky one if all the third molars erupt in a correct direction in your mouth else it becomes a major source of pain and discomfort!

A third molar that is partially erupted but not in the correct position or is trying really hard to erupt but is unable to might lead to a lot of pain. It can cause food lodgement and decay of the adjacent tooth. There could a partial layer of gum tissue that gets red and swollen up due to inability to effectively clean that area a condition also known as Pericoronitis.

What to do now?

  • Visit your nearby dentist and get a full evaluation done clinically and radiographically to assess the position of the wisdom tooth/third molar.
  • Your dentist shall take a chair-side x-ray also known as RVG and may even prescribe you a complete full mouth x-ray know as a OPG for further treatment.
  • The area of concern should be immediately disinfected using a Povidone-iodine -saline solution and a pain killer should be recommended. Incase of cheek biting or ulceration in the mouth a cholinsalicylate gel can be applied.
